Announcing Rob Douglas as Director of Congregational Discernment

We are excited to share that Rob Douglas has been selected as the new Director of Congregational Discernment (DCD) for the Presbytery of San Fernando. Rob brings a wealth of experience and passion for helping churches discover God’s best for their future. His work will focus primarily on supporting congregations through the revitalization and discernment processes, ensuring they continue to thrive and fulfill their mission. In his new role, Rob will collaborate closely with the Committee on Ministry (COM) and the Evangelism and Church Growth Committee (ECG), under the supervision of our Executive Presbyter, Juan Sarmiento.

This new position aligns with the Presbytery’s ongoing commitment to the health and vitality of our churches. Rob will step into this role officially on November 1st, following a rich legacy left by Mike Harbert, who is retiring as the Associate for Congregational Discernment. Mike’s wonderful ministry and faithful service have laid a solid foundation for this work, and we are grateful for his profound impact throughout the Presbytery.

A Careful and Prayerful Search Process

The search for our new Director of Congregational Discernment began in July. Over the past few months, we were blessed to review applications from nine excellent candidates. Five individuals were invited for interviews, each bringing unique gifts and insights. After much discernment and prayer, the interview team felt strongly that Rob Douglas was the right person to lead this vital ministry.

We want to express our deep appreciation to the interview team, whose dedication and thoughtful engagement made it possible to identify the best candidate. Special thanks to:

  • Paul Smolich (RE), Chair of the Personnel Committee
  • Rev. Niki Rodas (TE)
  • Mike Harbert (TE)
  • Juan Sarmiento (TE)

The team was also aided by Jim Sillerud (TE), chair of the Committee on Ministry.

“I was impressed with Rob for several reasons. His breadth of diverse pastoral experience over the years equips him to relate effectively in challenging situations with churches and sessions, demonstrating both empathy and practical wisdom. Rob’s leadership in starting of Lightshine Church reflects not only his commitment to new ministries but also his ability to navigate the complexities of establishing and nurturing a congregation. Additionally, as the founder and director of Cyclical Full Circle, Rob brings valuable insights into church innovation, making him an excellent fit for our role in the Presbytery. His background in education, combined with strong listening skills and extensive pastoral experience, gives me confidence that he will be able to “hit the ground running” and contribute meaningfully from the outset.”
-Paul Smolich, Chair of the Personnel Committee

“Rob is not only very well connected to the life of our presbytery, but he also brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the very challenging and important task of helping existing church leaders discern a fruitful path forward. Rob also knows how to bridge the gap between our new worshipping community leaders and -our long-term pastors and elders. Rob will be a gift to our presbytery.”
